The Sendall Tunnel in St. George's
I got these pictures from Tourism pages about Grenada: This is the tunnel we drove through on our way back to Gouyave from Point Salines.
This 340-foot tunnel is the most convenient connection from the Carenage to the Esplanade,
a commercial area filled with markets and shops facing the waterfront. The tunnel was
rightly considered a technological triumph when completed in 1895.
The Sendall Tunnel is a shortcut between the Esplanade and the Carenage, the inner part of St. George's horseshoe-shaped harbor.
I recall the tunnel cuts through a hill and it was a narrow one-way road, and a narrow tunnel with an angled ceiling. The length of the tunnel roof you could see marks where trucks had scraped there paint down the length of the tunnel roof on one side or the other. I thought our Army drivers were doing pretty good, and had to keep to the center of the tunnel to keep an appropriate clearance so they wouldn't do the same. I don't think the lowered hight restriction, "MAX HGT 7' FEET" with the board across the opening, was in place across the tunnel when we went through.
